Looking North, circa 1960. This splendid view of most of what is the City of New Port Richey, shows Orange Lake (Sims Park) from the Cotee River, gives the viewer a sense of awe, looking over the expanse of an entire City in one shot. The prominent streets in this photograph, at the lower portion of the photograph, are Grand Boulevard going from Gulf Drive north, as far as the eye can see. Schwettman School is seen just over the River going south on Grand, and across the street from this School, one may see Zane Rankin's Grocery Store, now occupied by the Palms Office building, 5509 Grand Blvd. Grand Boulevard is making a Westward bend in the road at Gulf Drive. The next major street to the East of Grand, from the River at the very tip of the point of River in this picture, was called South Madison Street. Today, a bridge runs across the River connecting the two streets, enabling one to travel from Massachsettes Avenue to Moog Road without having to use Grand Boulevard. It also opened up Madison Street to more development, and is a vital connection between the lands being bisected by the Cotee River. Notice the vegetation and undeveloped blocks in the areas east of Madison between Louisiana and Delaware Avenues, to the North and South, and Madison Street to Van Buren on the East. The Development of U.S. 19 appears to have been well under way, as seen on the left hand side of the Photograph. Photo by Angelo Deciucies; caption (2008) by David A. Henry.
